Herders/Farmers: US envoy task stakeholders on American feedlot to reduce clashes

The American Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E Stuart Symington has called on Nigerians to embrace modern meat production, especially the feedlot system to mitigate the persistent clashes between herders and farmers.

He made this known recently, June 29, 2019 during the launch of the American style Feedlot in Okene,  Kogi state recently, where he encouraged the people to embrace feedlot system hence it is more productive and result oriented.

He reiterated that the modern meat production feedlot will reduce the constant clashes of herdsmen and farmers in the country. He also said that if Nigeria can get it right the whole West Africa will do the same and the whole world will be a peaceful place to be.

The executive governor of Kogi state represented by the secretary to the state government of Kogi,  Dr. Mrs. Folashade Ayoade, assured the conveners that the administration of Ahaji Yaya Bello is solidly behind the initiative, because it fits into the agricultural  goals of the state government.

The Hon. Commissioner for agriculture Barrister Kehinde Oloruntobi thanked the American government for believing in the people of Kogi and the administration of Ahaji Yaya Bello, he also said that this is one of the major agricultural objectives of the Governor to proffer and bring to an end the farmers and herdsmen clashes in the state.

 He pledged the support of Kogi state ministry of Agriculture in realizing the feedlot objective

Mr.  Kwasari Andrew, adviser policy and project management to the former  minister of Agriculture and Rural Development explained that the project is in line with president Muhammadu Buhari’s grazing agenda, and that we need more private investors in this regard.

He stressed that the federal government is willing to support such ideas that will help to improve the agricultural sector and lay to rest the constant clashes of farmers and herdsmen in the country.

He also revealed that the federal government welcomes this noble Idea and that the government will not hesitate to partner with JIL farms and equipment so as to replicate this kind of project in other states.

 The chief executive officer of modern meat production company and the initiator of the project Dr, Ayoade Akere, a Nigerian investor based in United States of America, said that the journey started over twenty years ago, and that he is happy seeing it become a reality today with the support of his partners, Engineer Joseph Makoju Chairman, Macks Farm Limited and  Mr. Jerry Cunningham.

He thanked the United states Ambassador to Nigeria for finding out time to come in person and the governor of Kogi state for providing the enabling environment for the project to take off and he pleaded for more support from the Kogi state Government so as to sustain the project. He also said that the project will provide multiple value chains in its entirety, ranging from employments and other business activities that is synonymous with modern feedlot system.
